The United States Testing Company, Inc., and the Consumer Products Safety Commission tested the shock absorption capability of various playground surfaces spread at a depth of 6 inches for each of the test products.

Asphalt demonstrated high injury potential for a fall from a height of only 1 foot. Uniform wood chips, bark mulch and wood mulch provided impact protection for falls of 6 to 7 feet.

Rubber mulch outperformed them all with protection from drops of up to 12 feet.
