Needlepunched fabrics are nonwoven materials made directly from natural
or synthetic fibers that are laid into a loose web or batting and needled into
a consolidated material. In the process, barbed needles penetrate the batting
repetitively, hooking tufts of fiber with each stroke and thereby interlocking the
fibers into a three-dimensional, unified fabric.
Needlepunched fabrics can be made from either natural or synthetic virgin fibers,
which accounts for about two thirds of the total needlepunched production
output. Natural fibers used include cotton, wool, sisal, jute, hemp and a few
others. Far more volume is produced from synthetic fibers. While virtually any
synthetic fiber can be used, the most common are primarily polyester and
polypropylene. Smaller amount of nylon and other synthetics are used in specialty
end-uses.
